07/06/08 | Neil Slater Retires and the UNT 1:00 Tour Europe
My colleague and mentor Neil Slater will be retiring as the Chair of the UNT Jazz Division and Director of the One O' Clock Lab Band this August. As part of a celebration of his career, the 1:00 is currently touring Europe with Neil. The link is a video made recently by The Dallas Morning News chronicling the event. I will be the Interim Director of the One O'clock next year and am getting ready for a great time!


02/12/08 | UNT U-Tubes Receive the 2008 Kai Winding ITA Jazz Trombone Group Award!
The UNT U-Tubes, the jazz trombone ensemble the I direct, has been chosen as the winners of the 2008 Kai Winding Jazz Trombone Competition. The group will be featured at the International Trombone Festival held this year in Salt Lake City, Utah May 28-31. The Kai Winding competition is open to jazz trombone groups internationally and is considered the most prestigious award of its kind.

12/06/07 | Steve Wiest Receives Grammy Nomination!
I just learned today that I was nominated for a Grammy for "Best Instrumental Arrangement". I wrote "Besame Mucho" for Maynard Ferguson's final CD "The One and Only Maynard Ferguson" which I also had the great honor of playing trombone on as well. Virtually all of the good things in my musical life (and many of the wonderful things in my personal life!) are a result of my assoication with this great man, and I am thrilled that he and my music have been honored in this way by the Recording Academy. 12/21/06 | New CD Recorded with Stockton Helbing
Steve recorded on a new CD with drummer Stockton Helbing last week in Denton, Texas (home of the famous UNT Jazz Program). Included on the session were: Chip McNeil: saxophones, Ken Edwards: trumpet, Brian Mulholland: bass, David Braid: piano, and Noel Johnston: guitar. The session went very well and the music was way cool! The release will be sometime in early 2007. Check out Stockton's link for more info.
